Chunghwa Telecom  (CHT) announced the official launch of the submarine cable system, dubbed APG (Asia-Pacific Gateway), which costs around NT$20 billion (US$628 million: US$1=NT$31.82) jointly invested by Chunghwa Telecom and other 12 Asia-pacific major telecom operators, including China Telecom, NTT Communications, KT Corporation, Starhub, CAT, Global Transit, Viettel and VNPT, reported China Times on November 18. A total length of around 10,900 kilometers of the system connects 11 landing points in Taiwan, Japan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, with 100 Gbps (Gigabit per second) optical transmission capabilities that have a total capacity of more than 54 Tbps (Terabits per second). Together with the newly opened cloud datacenter in Taiwan's New Taipei City, APG is expected to facilitate the government's so-called Asian Silicon Valley project, which aims to promote Taiwan's industries of tomorrow.
